What is preventive care?

Preventive care encompasses a range of services that have one purpose: to help you avoid chronic health conditions and maintain optimal health and well-being.

When you receive routine preventive care, the team at ENIHEALTHCARE finds problems at an early stage while there’s still time to prevent or treat the condition.

Without annual preventive care visits, a chronic health condition has time to progress into a full-blown, serious problem. At that stage, chronic disease can’t be cured. It can only be managed with ongoing care.

What happens during my preventive care visit?

During your preventive care visit, also known as a well-person visit, your provider at ENIHEALTHCARE reviews your medical history, checks your weight, heart rate, and blood pressure, and does a thorough physical exam. They may also check your hearing or vision, especially if you have diabetes and you’re at risk of developing diabetic retinopathy.

Your provider talks with you about any problems or questions you might have. Your preventive visit is the perfect time for you to get help with any challenges you may face, whether you want to learn how to reduce stress, lose weight, or stop smoking.

The heart of preventive care is screening your risk of developing a chronic health condition. There are two parts to your risk assessment. First, your provider draws your blood and tests it for cholesterol, blood sugar, and inflammatory markers. They may run other tests, depending on your overall health.

The second part of a risk assessment is learning about lifestyle issues that affect your health. Your provider talks with you about your diet, exercise, sleeping habits, the amount of alcohol you drink, if you smoke, and whether you live with chronic stress.

Does preventive care include other services?

ENIHEALTHCARE provides many services that they can include in your preventive care visit.

These are a few examples:

  • Women’s or men’s health exam
  • Cancer screenings
  • Mental health services (depression, anxiety, ADHD)
  • Chronic disease management
  • Cardiovascular profile
  • Electrocardiogram (EKG)
  • Spirometry
  • Cognitive testing
  • Allergy testing
  • Weight management
  • DNA testing (for personalized medicine)
  • Heart attack and stroke prevention
  • Vaccinations

Adults don’t need as many vaccinations as children, but they do need annual flu shots and at certain ages, they also need shots to protect against diseases such as pneumonia, shingles, and tetanus.
